[Translation] MINA May 2015 Masuda Takahisa – “Massu Styling” Volume 8

This Month’s theme is: “Styling Starting from the Shoes”

When I spoke with the team at the last photoshoot about the theme for this time, we decided we did not want not to feature red shoes because red is pretty common for shoes in print.  I get pretty embarrassed remembering that triumphant look on my face at that time, as I was all for doing a different color but ultimately it ended up being red. (LOL)

Normally when I buy new shoes I always take a polaroid of them and stick it to the outside of the box and then stack them in the hallway, but this pair of Nike Air Command Force’s really pulled me in so I just had to make them the main feature. I wanted to put together clothes in a lighter color, so I decided on a light color denim jacket and grey shorts. Since I specially curled my hair, I lightly placed the hat on.

Recently I have been really into socks, so today I put on white ones that just peek over the shoes. I also like when women wear socks and sneakers together or socks and sandals together. I heard that in general it’s something that men don’t like, but that’s strange to me because I think its really cute!

Also on the subject of Woman’s shoes, there’s something I’ve always wanted to do! For a woman’s birthday, I want to take her to eat at a restaurant where you have to take your shoes off. *** When we go to leave, her shoes would be replaced with a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes**that I had secretly prepared as a present for her. (The magazine staff members all sequel unison) Ahh but if that was done to me with NIKE’s I wouldn’t like that…. Maybe women are the same? LOL

Today’s Necklace

This is the Tiffany and Co. Necklace that I bought when I went to Paris for the first time on my own in my off time. This collet necklace that I admired and fell in love with at first sight is a keepsake from that trip to Paris. I like to shop at a travel destination, so it’s something I also look forward to during a concert tour.

Translator’s notes:
*** Taking your shoes off at a restaurant is still common in Japan, especially at Japanese restaurants.

** Christian Louboutin Shoes are very expensive high heels that are known for their red soul and are known as some of the most coveted heels for women next to Jimmy Choo.

Translators Notes:

This was my translation of “Have a nice day” from her “Just LOVE” Album. Please note that Japanese is my second language and this translation is just my interpretation of the lyrics based on my knowledge of the Japanese and English language. If you have any suggestions to better it, please comment below! Also, I do not own the rights to these song lyrics.

I had such a fun time translating this really light and fun song! I love Nishino Kana’s lyrics and this song may seem childish, but if you look a bit deeper I see a song that is motivating and positive, telling you to work hard but don’t be too hard on yourself sometimes. Self-love I guess?

Translation – Mina April 2015 , Masuda Takahisa – “Massu Styling” Volume 7

massu-styilg-volume-7This month’s theme is “Wearing white in Spring”

Typically a black and white base is common, but in contrast this was my first time being told to go with white and I wasn’t sure what to do.

The result was not all over white, but I thought that warming it up a bit by paring it with some brown would be good. I paired a long white shirt with a mesh top with goat hair as the focal point, and the bottoms are SISE flower print shorts. The pants and the shirt’s “Haramaki” 1 like design I have also been into recently. Besides the top, the shorts, hat, and sneakers I styled all brown. I really wanted the sneakers to be brown, but it ended up being beige instead. It’s a new item, but it really is my personal item…. LOL I think that this styling came out really well and I am very satisfied, but what do you guys think?

For styling white for a lady, I think wearing a long blouse is nice. I think wearing a long blouse like an outerwear is really fashionable. Kind of off topic (*while looking a the staff*) but a girl swing a button back a shirt that was about to come off is really nice. I am totally caught by that~…..!

Speaking of today’s styling, since the start of this column this is one took me the longest time putting it together and deciding what to do, but it was the fastest photo-shoot. It was totally done in an instant! LOL But, I will do my best next time as well!

Translator’s notes:

1- Haramaki is referring to a thing that you wear around your stomach in Japan to keep warm during the winter. Click here to see what it is.

Translation – Mina March 2015 , Masuda Takahisa – “Massu Styling” Volume 6

masus-styling-volume-6This Month’s Theme is “Loveable Hats and Sunglasses”

Massu’s popular column! This month’s styling is a close up on the fashion essential: accessories.

I love both sunglasses and hats and have tons of them. There are not many days that I don’t wear them. Like today, wearing the same necklace and T-shirt but changing the hat and sunglasses gives a different feeling is really interesting. What version do you like best, everyone?

  1. Hats in a “Mischievous” way

I don’t normally pile them on top of eachother though (LOL) I picked out a bunch and brought them for the photo-shoot. When having a flashy-clothing kind of day, a flashy cap is a must!

  1. Pop on a Flight Cap!

There are lots of gaunchy patches on it. With this the military style it also becomes “pop-like” I would hope! LO

  1. Wearing Heart Sunglasses Seriously

These are Jeremy Scott Heart sunglasses. I thought the beaded design was interesting and I bought it at first sight.

  1. Color Coordination

This pair of colored sunglasses is something that I wouldn’t normally wear personally, but trying them on I think it looks nice. I like how New Era sticks to their brand concept.

  1. To Open

The black lenses can both be opened and you can also put clear lenses in them as well, but because it looked strange during the photo-shoot it was rejected. Thus, you see the closed version.

  1. Very First Round Glasses

Round Glasses really don’t go well on me, but when I “met” these glasses it was a total “Finally!” moment. Using the broadness and the height of the hat, I tried creating a worldly, sophisticated look.

  1. I’m interested in…. Part 1

Because there are small pom poms stuck to the glasses, you can’t see out of them. About 10 of them have fallen off too. “If they are sitting in your glasses storage area, it would be really exciting!” I thought and I bought them.

  1. I’m interested in…. Part 2

I “met” this hat in a used clothing store. “THIS” I thought. I haven’t worn it outside the house even once, but I have worn it while watching TV (LOL).

  1. I’m a Playboy!

Vintage Playboy. The design was around even when it was out of style, but it came back around and I really do think it’s very cool.

This Month’s theme: Mature Coat.

Going along with the theme, this time I played around with this DIOR HOMME trench coat. A trench coat with black shorts is a staple style for me. For girls, I think wearing a trench coat with a check-patterned skirt is cute. Ah, but pairing it with neutral colored pants is also cute!  Having a tight bottom-half is also nice because a trench coat has an A-line silhouette.

I wanted to go with a “basketball” feel so I pared it with a T-shirt, sweatpants-shorts, and a headband. I used to be apart of the Basketball club, so I have lots of headbands from that time, but I hadn’t used them in coordinating outfits until recently. I thought about using a red cap with this outfit, but because I wanted a “basketball mix”, in the end I used the headband instead. That, and the style of the basketball pants. I like the baggy style, and I have lots of them! In public I have a sporty style, and because I see it around a lot is also probably also why I wanted to go with a basketball style this time. Speaking of “sporty style”, there are lots of people that wear caps or knit caps in a loose style…its awesome right?! I also like going with that style too.

My Favorite Apple

I got my hands on this BOOKMARC collaboration, GILAPPLE! The middle one is a light. Ideally I would love to try buying an apple in the city and walking around while eating it, but in reality I cut them up cleanly before eating them! LOLL I can’t really cook, but I can properly peel an apple!

This Month’s theme is: Mid-Winter warm Color.

To start with, for a winter coordinate I really like to use layering and different fabrics to add an extra something to the outfit. The theme this time is “Winter Colors”, so I was really wavering on whether or not to show a flashy space pattern down Jacket, but I picked this DISCOVERED Red checked, fleece rider jacket1 as the main item instead. I fell in love with this piece at first sight (again) because I thought with just this one piece I could mix prints without having to layer it with anything else. For outerwear2, color and patterns require courage to wear so people normally choose basic outerwear, but I really love and can’t resist this mix of different fabrics so this is an exception.

I didn’t hesitate at all with deciding this t-shirt for the inside of the jacket. In all honestly, I came up with it off the top of my head, but if you think about it the shirt maybe links the coloring of the outfit. Normally I would just wear my thin blue, kind of oversized pants for the bottom of the outfit, but this time I decided to turn on the “checked pattern switch” and spontaneously tied a check shirt around my waist with it.4    I would want to a terrace of a nice café if I went out and about in this coordinate. And, if said cafe gives you a blanket, that would basically be incorporating it into this coordinate!  (LOL)  No matter what, I am attracted to check patterned items. I like it so much that someday I want to do a head to toe check coordinate, let’s do it soon! Please look forward to it!

Also, its been fun having my hair black after a long time. Even with the same outfit coordinate you look different and the types of clothes you choose and that suit you change too.

WhaT’S in my bag today

1. This Alligator Key chain that liked and bought immediately. I always have it attached to something of mine.
2. Tegoshi has been massaging the sole if his foot with a golfball so I started to do the same.
3. I thought this pouch would be good for holding hard candy in so I bought it at a general store.

Translators Notes:

1. He uses the term: ボアライダース, “Boa Riders” for the Jacket and I asked my Japanese friend and looked it up online and this was the best translation I can find and we could come up with,  a fleece rider jacket.

2. Outerwear in Japanese means Jackets or Coats.

4.  He  means he tied a checked patterned shirt over his pants that he normally wears, like you see some Japanese idols wear sometimes.

[Translation] MINA December 2014, Masuda Takahisa – “Massu Styling” Volume 3

This month’s theme: “Knits for various daily wear”

It’s only the third volume, but I was given knits as a theme already and and impatiently declared “I don’t have any knits!” But… when I checked my closet I had some unexpectedly! (LOL) In any case, I brought a bunch of different kinds of knits and styled the same hat and pants combination with them in three different ways. Which one do you guys like the most?

The knits are from the brands (the top of the page down): Maison Martin Margiela, Sasquatchfabrix., and LABRAT.

The Margiela Knit is a silhouette that I normally don’t choose, but I fell in love with it at first sight in the store. Out of all the clothes  I have it’s the most “Honor’s student”-like. I began to think I want to wear knit a lot more after seeing the shot taken of me in this piece ! For a date, this knit would be good. Yup.

When you first see the striped knit you might think it’s kind of  gaudy looking, but I really like the shape of the turtleneck and dolman sleeve combination.

I think the detail on Paisley knit is interesting. I would wear it on a casual day to go meet with a friend.

To me, knit items aren’t as much of a daily item as sweat is, but wearing it all now like this was nice! I’ll try to wear more knit now. Also, the hat that I am wearing now I wore a long time ago on Music Station! It restricted by the season, but every year I wear it a ton. I wonder if anyone noticed??

Knit Companions

I began collecting badges by influence of a stylist. Whenever I go into a clothing shop or a general goods store and see a cute badge I snatch it up, especially animals I probably like the most. One day I think I want to try making a piece of clothing filled with those badges.
